Leadership Studies Course Descriptions and Syllabi

  • SLS 2260: Leadership Fundamentals
    The introductory course for the Leadership Studies program, this course is designed to look at leadership as an inside-out, relational phenomenon – from individual development to group dynamics and eventually complex organizations. A broad range of leadership topics including self-development, diversity, communications, conflict resolution, group roles, teamwork, decision-making, ethics, organizational design and change, community building and renewal is covered.   • SLS 3948: Community Leadership Practicum
    This course provides an opportunity for students to apply and test leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities. Students are placed in a position of leadership to practice theory and examine personal obligations to citizenship and community. Read the Syllabus (.pdf) Leadership Practicum

  • SLS 4274: Ethics and Power in Leadership
    This course addresses the possibility of ethical leadership. Challenges to ethical leadership are explored and responses from leadership and moral theories and from moral psychology are reviewed. Personal moral development is emphasized. Read the Syllabus (.pdf) Topical Outline (.pdf)
  • SLS 4274: Ethics and Power in Leadership - Summer '09

    The study abroad version covers the same readings and seminar topics as the campus based version. However, the sequence of the topics is modified to fit class locations and free time is included so that students may plan touring options. These details are available in the Topical Outline/Itinerary for the study abroad version.
