Harbor Day 2007 is scheduled for September. Date and time TBA.

The Harbor Day Initiative is a campaign by USF St. Petersburg students, faculty, staff, affiliates and community members to clean up Bayboro Harbor, promote awareness of issues affecting our waterways and coastal environments, and educate the community about the importance of pollution prevention.

The inaugural Harbor Celebration took place on April 12, 2006 and was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who came out to support this event!

Harbor Day Activities
  • Participate in Keep Pinellas Beautiful Adopt-A-Shore Program and encourage community organizations to do the same - SEAS has adopted the Bayboro Harbor seawall extending from the College of Marine Science to Poynter Park. For the next clean-up date, see Activities and Events
  • Participate in local marine clean-ups, and encourage others to do the same
  • Encourage Florida friendly landscaping on our campus and in our community
  • Support educational campaigns for schools, community organizations, and governmental organizations to raise awareness concerning litter and pollution prevention

Why is this important?

Bayboro Harbor has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water and is a recognized manatee habitat area. It is a distinctive feature of our campus and the USF College of Marine Science, and its shore is home to organizations such as the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, the Southeast Regional Office of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.

It is the endpoint for much of the City of St. Petersburg watershed and storm water drainage system. The result is an accumulation of litter and other pollutants that contaminate our waters, endanger wildlife, and tarnishes the beauty of our Harbor.

As a community we can work together to foster an awareness and appreciation for our natural resources, reminding ourselves and others to take individual responsibility for decisions that affect the quality of our coastal ecosystems.
