One of our main objectives is to implement a lasting and efficient recycling program at USF St. Petersburg. For more information about this effort, contact Abbie Harris at abbieh@stpt.usf.edu.
At the Campus Showcase on January 18, 2006, the S.E.A.S. members asked students, staff and faculty members to participate in a survey about recycling and other sustainable activities at USF St. Petersburg.

Did you know that over 70% of the waste in Pinellas County could be recycled?

Why Recycle?
Recycling is important for social, economic, and environmental reasons. Recycling, along with waste reduction and waste diversion programs, plays an essential role in conserving landfill space and sustaining our solid waste management system.
Where does your trash go?
It is vital to recycle and reduce waste here in Pinellas County because we have only one solid waste facility. We are fortunate to have a model waste-to-energy facility that converts much of our garbage to energy. Even though our solid waste facility is one of the largest in the country, the fact is that it has a daily capacity of 3,150 tons, but Pinellas County as a whole generates over 4,000 tons per day of municipal solid waste. Without recycling, we'd have to dispose of 1,000 tons per day of in our landfill, which also have a limited capacity.
What's next?
Pinellas County is Florida 's most urbanized county, and is continuously growing. We do not have room to build another solid waste facility. Pinellas County 's resources are challenged daily with the trash generated by almost a million residents.
Your participation—at home, school, work, and play—
is essential to help build a sustainable future for Pinellas County.
