GET INVOLVED!

One of the best things about your Psychology Program is the great combination of "small campus" access to faculty and "major university" access to unique opportunities. Although it's late in the semester, there is still time to get involved ...

Looking for a great opportunity for volunteer work? The Suncoast Pediatric Asthma Coalition is looking for volunteers to lead children’s programs on the 7th Annual Asthma Family Day (May 10, Saturday, 8:30am – 1pm, to be held at USFSP). Asthma Family Day is a free, informative, and fun event for children, adolescents, and parents, and offers a variety of programs that are designed to improve asthma self-management skills and awareness.

Dr. Otsuki is looking for approximately 8 volunteers for Asthma Family Day to lead Children’s Programs. There will be 4 groups (ages 4-6, 7-8, 9-12, and 13+) and for each group, there will be two volunteers to lead the fun, educational activities. Volunteers do not need to have background knowledge about asthma (it will be helpful, of course), but will be required to attend training session(s) prior to the Asthma Family Day. Interest and/or experience in teaching health-related issues a huge plus!  If you are energetic, enjoy working with kids, and have good leadership skills, please contact Dr. Otsuki (motsuki@stpt.usf.edu) for further information on this wonderful volunteer opportunity!

Department News:

TO ALL USFSP PSYCH MAJORS:

NEW PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM RULE FOR 2007-08

PLEASE READ!!

Many of our students have asked for coursework that provides opportunities to work directly with children and youth in the community. Currently, our psychology program offers two such service learning courses, Child Psychology and Behavior Modification. Both courses will be offered in spring, 2008 by Dr. Susan Toler.

Effective immediately: Any student wishing to enroll in one or both of those courses in spring 2008 must have taken Dr. Chenneville’s Ethics course in the fall of 2007. Students will not be permitted to work in the community practicum placement of Child Psychology or Behavior Modification in the spring unless they completed the fall Ethics course with a grade of “C” or better.

If you plan to enroll in Child Psychology or Behavior Modification in spring 2008 and have not yet enrolled in Dr. Chenneville’s Ethics course in the fall, please do so now!

Our Mission:

The Psychological Science program at USFSP is committed to the pursuit of innovative scientific inquiry that impacts important societal issues. Our program's aim is to help contribute to the field of psychology through thoughtful intellectual leadership built on the foundation of careful empirical research efforts that have implications for helping to improve the human condition. Core faculty members are active scientists engaged in both basic and applied research; current members of our group have special interests and expertise in the domains of social, family, community, clinical, cognitive, forensic, and pediatric psychology, as well as research methodology and statistics. Our undergraduate program affords students a rigorous training experience emphasizing both the theoretical and empirical foundations of our discipline. In keeping with our mission, we also offer students unusually rich opportunities to engage in intensive, outside-the-classroom research apprenticeships toward their development as outstanding undergraduate scientists.

Our core faculty members all teach courses in the undergraduate program, and work closely with students on cutting-edge research topics. Faculty members address key scientific controversies in their research programs and communicate with national and international leaders through their scholarly work; undergraduate students who collaborate with our faculty on research present the fruits of their own efforts in both local and national research forums. We strive to graduate incisive, broad thinking young scientists possessing the skills and competencies to address questions of societal importance themselves, and to continue their training in top graduate programs around the country. High school or transfer students interested in majoring in Psychological Science at USFSP are encouraged to contact any members of our faculty directly to receive more detailed information about our program.
