goAbout the Program
If you want to become an elementary teacher (grades K-6) and have a bachelor's degree in a field outside of education, then this program is for you. Completion of the entire program (coursework and internships) leads to initial certification in Elementary Education with ESOL certification and a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Elementary Education.

goAdmission Requirements

You must apply to USF St Petersburg Graduate Studies and also fulfill these requirements to be admitted to this program:

  1. Submit proof of one of these:
    • Successful completion of all portions of the General Knowledge Test (GKT)* OR
    • Successful completion of all portions of the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), OR
    • a GRE score of 1000, OR
    • a Praxis I score (out-of-state applicants).
      *The General Knowledge Test is preferred.
  2. A grade point average of 3.0 or greater for the last two years of their undergraduate degree.
  3. NOTE: For admission with a grade point average of 2.5 to 3.0, the University requires a score of 1000 or greater on the combined verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

At graduation all credits used to satisfy requirements for the Master's Degree must have been completed within five academic years. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: DUAL TRACK PROGRAM - SELF-CHECKLIST
Students are responsible for all information in the USFSP COE Graduate Catalog and department materials.

  1. Submit graduate application online at https://secure.vzcollegeapp.com/usf/
  2. Submit official transcripts to

    Letters of recommendation are not required for applicants who meet requirements.
  3. Have Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores reported to USFSP Graduate Admissions. For GRE and TOEFL: institution code 5828
  4. Obtain an online Graduate Catalog. http://www.stpt.usf.edu/spgrad/Graduate_Catalog_Index.htm
  5. Validate your admission by taking at least one course in the semester in which you are admitted. If you are unable to do so, contact Associate Dean, Dr. Deanna Michael (727-873-4991) otherwise, you will be dropped from the program.
  6. File a Planned Program of Studies with your advisor during the first semester admitted.
  7. Maintain a 3.0 grade point average to remain in good academic standing.
  8. Submit an application for the Practicum (EDG 6931) by the deadline, the semester before interning.
  9. Apply for Final Internship two semesters prior to the semester you plan to intern. Register for Final Internship (EDG 6947) in the semester of internship. Details regarding Final Internship can be found at http://www.stpete.usf.edu/coe/internship/index.htm.
  10. Pass the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FCTE), (Elementary Education K-6 subject area exam, General Knowledge Test and Professional Education) prior to Final Internship. Submit an original score sheet to the Associate Dean, Dr. Deanna Michael (COQ 201) as soon as all exams are passed.
  11. Submit the Application for Degree (Graduation) to your advisor before the end of the semester prior to the one you plan to graduate. Meet with your advisor at this time to review graduation requirements. The form is online at http://www.registrar.usf.edu/forms/GraduateDegreeApp22010-04-16_15_30_30.pdf. Please print the form and turn it in at the College of Education Office at COQ 201.

goFrequently asked questions about the Dual Track Program

  • Can I attend full-time or part-time?
    Yes, for either option. However, your course of study should be carefully planned each semester because some courses are only offered at night and some courses may have a limited number of sections.
  • Can I complete the program in St. Petersburg?
    The entire Dual Track program is offered at USF St. Petersburg. In addition, courses in the program are offered at Pasco Hernando Community College (PHCC) in New Port Richey.
  • Can I complete the program by taking classes only at night?
    Two semesters of field experience are required in the Dual Track program. EDG 6931 (Practicum) students are assigned to elementary classrooms two days per week for twelve weeks. ESOL III Practicum (FLE 5940) students work with ESOL children in the public schools for 60 hours. EDG 6947 (Final Internship) is a full-time internship for an entire semester. In addition to the internships, some courses may be available only during the day (some semesters).
  • How long does it take to complete the program?
    Students attending full-time can complete the program, including internships, in five to six semesters. Those attending part-time will lengthen the time required to complete the program. However, coursework may not be older than five years at the time of graduation.
  • May I take courses before I am admitted to the program?
    You may take specified courses at USF St. Petersburg as a non-degree seeking student. Please note that only 12 credits maybe transferred into the program.
  • May I transfer courses from another university?
    With departmental approval, a maximum of 8 semester hours or three graduate courses may be transferred from a regionally accredited university. However, no undergraduate courses may be substituted for a graduate course. You will be asked to provide a transcript, catalog course description, and syllabus.
  • What are the Comprehensive Exams?
    The Comprehensive Exams assess knowledge from various course topics. In the Dual Track program, the Teacher Work Sample (TWS) with a research basis is assessed as the comprehensive exam / project
  • How do I receive the ESOL Endorsement?
    Several Courses in the Dual Track Program satisfy requirements for the state endorsement in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). The endorsement will be noted on your transcript.
