The application and all supporting documentation must be received by the
USF St. Petersburg, College of Education,
140 7th Avenue South, Coquina 201, St. Petersburg, FL 33701,
or postmarked on or before 5:00 p.m. on March 1, 2009.

 

The Frances Louise Stavros Scholarship in the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg has been provided through a generous gift from Dr. Gus A. Stavros in honor of his wife. This scholarship is based on both Financial Need and Academic Merit. The scholarship will awarded by a USF St. Petersburg College of Education Committee including members from the college faculty and the Dean of the College. The scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis to the most commendable applicants. Academic merit and financial need criteria as noted below will be used as the minimum starting points for consideration. Criteria may be applied more rigorously, depending upon the size and qualifications of the applicant pool. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee selection.

All applicants must be:

  • Admitted as a USF St. Petersburg degree seeking graduate student in the College of Education and in “Good Standing” with the University
  • Admitted to an initial teacher certification program in the College of Education (i.e., The Dual Track Program or the MAT Program in Exceptional Student Education)
  • Enrolled full or part-time (i.e., 9 credit hours a semester for full-time)
  • A graduate student with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA
  • A resident of Pinellas County

APPLICATION PACKET

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Personal Data – Complete all fields as specified.
  2. Short Essay – Please submit an essay covering the topic listed on the application. The essay should be organized and succinct. Essays are limited to 500 words.
  3. Financial Need - You will need to complete a federal Financial Aid form called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA. Financial need for USF St. Petersburg Scholarships is determined using an indicator of family need, called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is calculated using information from the FAFSA. Remember to include the school code 001537 for USF St. Petersburg, so that we will receive an electronic version of your FAFSA. Estimated tax information can be used to complete the application online. Your scholarship application will not be complete until the school receives your FAFSA. (www.fafsa.ed.gov)
  4. Additional Considerations - You may have financial considerations which may not be represented on your latest FAFSA or elsewhere in this application. Review the factors listed, and if any of them apply to you, check the appropriate box(es) and provide a brief explanation.
  5. Student Certification – All applicants must certify that all information provided on the application is correct.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST
Include the following with your application packet:

  • USF St. Petersburg Frances Louise Stavros Scholarship Application Form – All lines completed.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation – Each continuing USF St. Petersburg student is required to have two letters of recommendation submitted from USF St. Petersburg faculty or staff. To request a letter of recommendation, you may use our “Recommendation Form” or submit personalized recommendation letters. It is the responsibility of the scholarship applicant to make sure letters of recommendation are received by the College of Education, Frances Louise Stavros Scholarship, or postmarked on or before 5:00 p.m. on March 1, 2008.
  • Personal Essay – Attach a 250-500 word essay in response to the topic in Section 2 of the application.
  • School Activities, Community Involvement and Leadership - If you have copies of certificates or awards, you can include a copy as supporting documentation for your application.

NOTIFICATIONS

The Frances Louise Stavros Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the College of Education Scholarship Committee during April 2008. Expect to receive your notification of scholarship receipt or denial during May 2008.

Scholarship criteria are based on University policy in conjunction with the intent of the individual donor(s). Scholarship awards may impact other sources of financial assistance administered by the University.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT EXPECTATIONS

As part of the award process, and in recognition of donor commitment to the University, scholarship recipients will not receive funding until two copies of their donor thank you letters have been submitted to the USF St. Petersburg College of Education in Coquina 201, prior to the term in which the award is scheduled to be paid.
Additionally, recipients are expected to attend the annual Scholarship Luncheon to be held mid-November. This is an opportunity for scholarship recipients to thank family and donors for their encouragement and support.
