College of Education Hosts Florida Department of Education Team |
The College of Education looks forward to hosting its first site visit from the Florida Department of Education, September 21-24. The purpose of the visit is a continuing program approval review of the College of Education’s MA degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The program, which has 70 graduate students enrolled, is designed for students interested in becoming elementary teachers but have bachelor’s degrees in areas other than education. Students, who come with degrees in accounting, psychology, and law, report that the program gives them the opportunity to follow their dreams of making a difference in the lives of children...

Education Students Travel to Honduras for Study Abroad |
Local elementary school teachers from Pinellas and
Hernando counties will travel to Honduras in June to help enhance educational programs in
a rural mountain village. Their trip is in conjunction with Honduras Agalta Valley Education,
a non-profit foundation established by local businessman and philanthropist, Gerry Hogan. Led by Dr. Vivian Fueyo, dean of the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg, the
teachers, all graduate students at USF St. Petersburg, will spend a week teaching
fundamental teaching practices to a team of teachers in the Agalta Valley of Honduras from
June 21 to 28. Two of the teachers are ESOL instructors in Pinellas County and the other is
a kindergarten teacher in Hernando County. They will earn three graduate course credits
while using their Spanish skills to help the teachers in the Agalta Valley and work with the
elementary students in the schools. This course is the first international opportunity for

College of Education Accepted as a Formal Candidate for National Accreditation |
At its October 16-21, 2006 meeting in Washington, DC, the Unit Accreditation Board (UAB) of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) considered the application for candidacy of the College of Education, as the unit that oversees the professional education offerings at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Frances Louise Stavros Scholarship Available |
The Frances Louise Stavros Scholarship in the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg has been provided through a generous gift from Dr. Gus A. Stavros in honor of his wife. This scholarship is based on both Financial Need and Academic Merit. The scholarship will awarded by a USF St. Petersburg College of Education Committee including members from the college faculty and the Dean of the College. The scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis to the most commendable applicants. Academic merit and financial need criteria as noted below will be used as the minimum starting points for consideration. New Faculty Role Focuses on Recruitment and Retention |
Juanita Fountain, Ph.D., Instructor of Childhood Education, is now serving as the Minority Recruitment and Retention Coordinator for the College of Education. Fountain, who began in this position in spring 2007, is working with Enrollment Services, the dean of the College of Education and COE faculty and students to develop a strategic enrollment plan for recruiting and retaining diverse students in the college.
