Student Housing Internet Access

Bedroom Connection
Wireless Internet Access

Bedroom Connection

High speed Internet access is available in every bedroom at no additional charge to residents. A single, active connection port and wall jack is provided per room. Your computer must be equipped with a network interface card (NIC) to connect to that port. The majority of new personal computers are already equipped with a NIC. If you have an older computer, or are unsure of what connection to look for on your current computer, please feel free to call Campus Computing at (727) 873-HELP.

Please print and read our Internet Access Checklist for instructions on how to hook up your computer to our high speed Internet access.

Virus Protection

Virus protection, or antivirus, is also required for computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system. If your computer is running Windows, please verify that you have an active and current subscription for your antivirus product, such as McAfee VirusScan or Norton Antivirus. If your subscription is expired, or you do not have an antivirus product, please download and install McAfee VirusScan from the USF Security Web site. McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Edition is provided for free for all USF students, faculty and staff. Your USF NetID and password is required to download McAfee VirusScan.

Remove (uninstall) all anti-virus products before installing McAfee VirusScan. While installing VirusScan, choose the "Perpetual" license expiration at the license agreement portion of the installation process. This will keep your McAfee VirusScan subscription from expiring.

Clean Access Agent

The last requirement for Microsoft Windows users is downloading and installing a product called Cisco Clean Access. Clean Access will check the Windows operating system to see if the latest security updates and virus protection software is installed. Clean Access will be available for download when you start your Web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape. Your USF NetID and password is required to download Clean Access.

Routers, switches, hubs or wireless access points may not be connected to any Internet port in student housing. Doing so violates the USF Network Access agreement, and will constitute an automatic termination of your Internet access.

Registration

All resident students must register their computer with the USF Registration Server to activate their Internet connection. Registration is available at the following Web site: http://www.net.usf.edu/cca/

Gaming consoles and multimedia devices can also be registered for Internet access. Gaming console registration is available at http://www.net.usf.edu/reshalls/gaming/. The MAC address, which identifies the network card on a gaming console or multimedia device will be needed to register. Instructions for obtaining the MAC address from a gaming console are available at http://www.net.usf.edu/reshalls/gaming/mac.php.

Multimedia devices, such as handheld PDAs, iPhones, etc. will usually have the MAC address printed on the back of the device.

Wireless Internet Access

The USFSP wireless network gives students the ability to roam the Internet with the latest wireless networking technology. Both 802.11b and 802.11g wireless network standards are supported in numerous indoor and outdoor locations. The recommended range extends from each of the wireless access locations, outward by about 200 feet.

Access Points

Aside from student housing, the wireless network is accessible at the following
on-campus locations:

  • Bayboro Hall
  • Bayboro Station
  • Campus Activities Center
  • Coquina Hall
  • Davis Hall
  • Florida Center for Teachers
  • Piano Man
  • Poynter Library
  • Residence Hall One
  • Snell House
  • Terrace
  • 1st floor parking garage area (planning stages)

Wireless Registration

To activate your wireless Internet access, visit the Network Registration Server and proceed with the instructions on that site.
