While there seem to be a variety of sources, including the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research, that provide information on some aspects of the impact of the phosphate industry on Florida, there does not seem to be a recent survey of both economic and environmental impacts. In addition, there does not seem to be research specifically geared towards the impacts on the Tampa Bay region. The objective of the present research is to remedy these defects. In so doing, a clearer picture of current conditions, and potentially future trends, should emerge. Since the Center for Science and Policy Applications for Coastal Environments (C-SPACE) is concerned with coastal waters, one significant industry to investigate is the phosphate industry.
Bringing together economic and environmental impacts should highlight the challenges presented by this industry to the Tampa Bay area. The historical perspective should also serve as a springboard for future research projects analyzing the impact of other industries on the region and the state.
