Campus Goes Green with New Science and Tech Building

GroundbreakingWith the turn of golden shovels, campus and community leaders broke ground on the Science and Technology Building at USF St. Petersburg.

Held Thursday, June 5 at the future site of the building, the program previewed the opportunities the building will foster for students and faculty. Expected to open in August 2009, the building will add nearly 35,000 square feet of classrooms, teaching labs and research labs.

Designed to meet the rigorous standards of LEED certification, it is the first building in the USF system to register with the independent organization that certifies environmentally responsible buildings.

Regional Chancellor Karen A. White said, “This environmental stewardship in the construction of new classroom and laboratory space exemplifies a philosophy and value that is deeply held on our campus.”

This facility will broaden academic and research opportunities for students while helping to accommodate health-oriented degree programs that respond to community needs.

This project brings USF St. Petersburg’s five-year investment in capital construction to $51 million. This includes the construction of Residence Hall One, its first residential housing for students, the 1,100-space parking facility and Barnes & Noble USF St. Petersburg, which serves both the university and the St. Petersburg community.

St. Petersburg City Council Chairman Jamie Bennett said, “USF St. Petersburg is important to our economy and our future. We care about USF and we care about our downtown university.”

Architectural firm Reynolds Smith & Hills designed the Science and Technology Building, and the contractors, Creative Contractors of Clearwater, have led other environmentally conscious construction in Tampa Bay.
