University Needs
Since its beginning forty years ago, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg has forged a history rich in persistence, entrepreneurship and ingenuity. First established in the former U.S. Maritime Service Training Station in 1965 with just 257 students and a full-time faculty of four, the USF St. Petersburg campus has grown exponentially in its mission, size and shape.
Today, USF St. Petersburg is a rapidly growing, fiscally autonomous, separately accredited university hosting more than 4900 full time students and hundreds of adult learners from Pinellas County and beyond on a 46-acre, urban campus overlooking Bayboro Harbor. The full-time faculty, now numbering more than 100, offers over 400 courses among 26 undergraduate and 12 graduate majors in arts and sciences, business and education, while simultaneously conducting wide-ranging and world-class research d esigned to meet society’s needs. And yet, USF St. Petersburg retains the culture of a close-knit, student-centered learning community where thousands of students benefit daily from knowing their professors on a personal basis.
During the next ten years, USF St. Petersburg will continue to move aggressively and strategically, to enhance existing academic programs, and to anticipate and address future needs by developing new initiatives determined by community-based educational priorities. The distinctive mission of the campus focuses on encouraging its students to be civically engaged and ethical leaders. Our graduates will be prepared to think critically, communicate effectively, and be involved in ways that help strengthen and benefit their communities.
