Cooperation
Cooperation between the International Ocean Institute and the International Maritime Organization is stipulated by an Agreement signed between these two organizations in December 2006 concerning collaboration on the London Convention/Protocol Issues.
The priorities for the Contracting Parties to the London Convention 1972 in their long-term Strategy for Technical Co-operation and Assistance are, among other things: improvement of the technical capacities in the countries concerned through technical assistance; promotion of the 1996 Protocol to the London Convention 1972.
The International Ocean Institute expressed readiness to assist the IMO (London Convention and Protocol) in meeting these priorities by promoting the London Convention and Regulatory Protocols and their products.
We have just been informed by the London Convention Secretariat that the first part of the "Waste Assessment Guidance Tutorial" is now available and ready for distribution.
The Waste Management Guidelines are intended for use by national authorities responsible for regulating the ocean dumping of wastes. They contain procedures to guide these authorities in evaluating applications for disposal of wastes in a manner consistent with the provisions of the London Convention and Protocol and offer a general approach to pollution assessment and may be applied in many fields of waste management.
This Tutorial, which is yet to be complemented by an Instructor's Manual and electronic presentation slides, demonstrates the general concepts of the Waste Assessment Guidelines and is directed to national administrations responsible for waste management. It explains key components of the Guidelines and offers access to experience of Contracting parties during the last 30+ years in regulating ocean dumping.
