General Education Assessment Committee (GEAC)

The GEAC was an ad hoc committee that met in the Spring 2008 semester.  During this time, the committee completed the following tasks:

  • Worked with faculty in writing and math to develop outcomes and assessment methods that are locally driven and designed, yet informed by national standards and compatible with USF system assessment.
  • Encouraged participation from faculty teaching liberal arts courses in all three colleges to participate in assessment of general education/exit courses by submitting student writing assignments to be scored by CLAQWA and by distributing open-ended question surveys to their students.
  • Engaged USFSP faculty and administration in forums and workshops on general education, assessment, and writing. These events have sparked discussion about the assessment of student learning and the importance of a liberal arts education across campus.
  • Implemented methods to assess student learning from Fall 05 to Spring 08 while laying the groundwork for a strong, sustainable GE e-portfolio to be integrated into the new liberal arts core curriculum that will begin its first phase in Fall 08.

In making these decisions, the GEAC has worked with faculty and stressed the importance of conducting outcomes assessment to help foster intentional student learning in our liberal arts curriculum.  To help create a positive climate for building an “assessment culture” on campus, the GEAC has promoted educational events. During the 2007-08 AY USFSP held three workshops presented by Terri Flateby (USF Office of Assessment) and Felix Wao (CTE, Tampa), the first focusing on program level (November 27, 2007);  the second on classroom level (February 6, 2008), and the third on preparing rubrics (April 30, 2008).  GEAC also held a two-day Writing Summit on assessment and e-portfolios presented by Michael Neal (Florida State), March 20-21, 2008.
