Welcome To The Department Of Journalism And Media Studies

If you're looking for a vibrant, exciting place to learn, collaborate, and create your own path to a career in journalism or media, you've come to the right place! In addition to all that we offer within our department, students also have the opportunity to sit in on and take courses at the internationally recognized Poynter Institute for Media Studies!

At the USFSP Department of Journalism and Media Studies, we’re dedicated to educating journalists who can report and interpret the news with skill, responsibility and social consciousness. We stress innovative, community-oriented coverage of public life, seeking out news and issues that relate to and touch the lives of ordinary citizens.

Our graduate and undergraduate programs allow for individually tailored approaches to journalism studies to accommodate the backgrounds and interests of our students. Professors with media experience teach in small, seminar-style classes.

The full-time faculty includes journalism practitioners and media scholars with national and international reputations. Each of the faculty regularly author books and write articles on journalism and media, while staying up to date on contemporary trends.

Adjunct professors and visiting lecturers come from the ranks of the Tampa Bay journalism community, including the Poynter Institute and the St. Petersburg Times.

We, as a faculty, take pride in our personalized approach to each and every student's education in journalism and media studies. Faculty are readily accessible to answer your questions, mentor you through course work, projects, internships, and independent research. You will work collaboratively with your fellow students and faculty in a community of professional journalists and media scholars.

In 2002, the department was named one of USF St. Petersburg’s four “Programs of Distinction.” The academic areas were chosen for this honor on the basis of past performance and the promise for greater success. We are proud to be nationally accredited by AEJMC, the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication, which assures the highest standards of classroom instruction.
