The Kaiser Media Internships in Health Reporting

Note: If you're interested in this internship, contact Prof. Deb Wolfe (dpwolfeusfsp@gmail.com). She has a contact there, and can offer application suggestions.

The Kaiser Media Internships Program, established in 1994, is an intensive 12-week summer internship for young journalists interested in specializing in health reporting, with a particular commitment to coverage of health issues affecting diverse and immigrant communities.

The Media Internships Program provides an initial week-long briefing on health issues and health reporting in Washington, D.C.  Interns are then based for ten weeks at their newspaper, online, or radio/TV station, typically under the direction of the Health or Metro Editor/News Director, where they report on health issues.  The program ends with a 3-day meeting in Boston to hear critiques from senior journalists and to go on final site visits. The aim is to provide young journalists or journalism college graduates with an in-depth introduction to and practical experience on the specialist health beat, with a particular focus on diverse and immigrant communities.

The internship provides travel to and from Washington, D.C., the internship city, Boston, and all training and accommodation expenses in D.C. and Boston, are paid by the Kaiser Family Foundation.  Interns are responsible for housing and other expenses during the ten weeks spent working at their news organizations.  The Kaiser Foundation provides a stipend—minimum $550 gross per week, matching the news organizations' own weekly rate, if higher.

Funded Journalism Internship Program in Berlin

Freie Universität Berlin and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are pleased to announce the third year of an intensive scholarship-supported summer seminar/internship program in Berlin for American journalism and communications students.

For the first six weeks of the program, participants will take part in a seminar series to expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country's current social conditions and media scene. During the second week, students will go on excursions within Germany together with journalism students from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union. The final five weeks consist of an intensive internship with a German newspaper, magazine, radio station or PR firm in or near Berlin.

Applicants must have at least "advanced intermediate" German skills to take part in the program, as the seminars and internships take place in the German language. The 20 applicants who are finally selected for the program will be awarded a monthly stipend of 650 Euros for the duration of their stay in Germany. DAAD will also provide participants a partial travel subsidy of 650-950 Euros (depending on US city of origin) towards the cost of international transportation to Germany; travel costs not covered by the partial subsidy must be paid by the individual program participants themselves. DAAD will also provide health and accident insurance. There will be a program fee of 140 Euros.

The application deadline is January 31, 2010. The 40 applicants who are invited to a selection interview in New York City (in early March) will receive up to $300 toward the cost of their flight to the interview location.

Stringer needed to cover Kayak Fishing Tournaments in the bay area

Capt. Pat Horrigan, IGFA Certified Guide and National Director of Kayak Fishing Classic tournaments, has a couple of magazine sponsors who are looking for someone to cover the tournaments. The tournament schedule is below, along with the captain's contact information.

The event sponsoring publications need someone to cover the tournaments by writing about them and taking some pictures. No need to be a pro photographer, just a decent picture with a digital camera is fine. Being a kayak fishing enthusiast is best or at least a kayaker that loves the outdoors.

He indicated there would be pay for the coverage, but didn't know what that might be (probably depends on how many events were covered during the tournaments).

Here’s the captain's contact information: 813.323.0363

Here's the Web site: www.KayakFishingClassicS.com

Here's the tentative schedule of when and where the events are being held in our area:

November  27th & 28th. Green Key Fly & Light Tackle Redfish Classic  (http://www.kayakfishingclassics.com/Tournaments.php)

January     Old Tampa Bay Monster Redfish Classic

February   Hillsborough Bay Mammoth Redfish Classic

March      St. Petersburg Trout Classic

April        Tarpon Springs, Florida

May         Homosassa Hazard Tarpon Classic

June       Fort De Soto Monster Snook Classic
