In a conference room, faculty and students meet after
class for informal discussion and snacks.
In a classroom, an instructor hooks up a laptop to
a big-screen projection system to critique students’ work.
These scenes give a hint of what goes on in the Florida
Center for Teachers, the new home of the Department of Journalism and
Media Studies.
In November 2000, faculty, with the help of movers,
relocated filing cabinets, computers and books from Coquina Hall to
the nearly completed building. Workers putting on final touches finished
up in time for the start of the spring term.
The Department of Journalism and Media Studies shares
the facility with the Florida Humanities Council.
Part of FCT includes meeting rooms, a reception hall,
a lunchroom and lounges for conferences of teachers from around the
state.
The Journalism and Media Studies offices include a
conference room, with a kitchenette.
One of the top features of the center is a high-tech
graphics and design lab, with 22 fully equipped Power Mac G4 computers
used for photojournalism, editing and visual communications classes.
Ten Fujifilm FinePix 4900 zoom digital still cameras and 10 Sony DCR-TRV20
video cameras were purchased as well.
The lab enabled the Department
of Journalism and Media Studies to expand its offerings to include courses
such as Web publishing and multimedia reporting and introduce a new undergraduate
option — visual communications.
