McHale Wins Irving B. Harris Award
June 23, 2004 4:46PM EST

Associate Professor of Psychology James McHale, PhD, won one of two Irving B. Harris Awards for Outstanding Book Proposals from the ZERO TO THREE Press. Authors of each winning proposal received $10,000 and a publishing contract with ZERO TO THREE Press. Awards are given to authors from a range of backgrounds who are addressing issues of emerging importance to the multidisciplinary infant–family field.

McHale's book will present the findings from a 10-year study that examined the “coparental partnership,” an alliance within families that is distinct from parent-child relationships or marital relationships.

The award is funded by the Irving B. Harris Foundation. Irving B. Harris, a life member of the Board of Directors of ZERO TO THREE, launched the Zero to Three Journal in 1980 and gave the publication and the organization its name.   He has supported specialized training in the infant-family field for almost 40 years. He also helped found Erikson Institute in Chicago and originated the Ounce of Prevention Fund, a public-private partnership serving young children and families in Illinois.

ZERO TO THREE is a national nonprofit organization that has been in existence since 1977. Its mission is to promote the healthy development of infants and toddlers by supporting families, communities, and those who work on their behalf. ZERO TO THREE’s efforts support the advancement of current knowledge; the promotion of beneficial policies and practices; the communication of research and best practices to a wide variety of audiences; and the development of training, technical assistance, and leadership in a variety of infant–family fields.

The ZERO TO THREE Press offers authoritative research, practical resources, and new ideas affecting those who work with and care about infants, toddlers, and their families. The Press publishes books, videos, and other resources on a variety of subjects, including child development, infant mental health, and early care and education.
