Sitting nearly three feet high, the SACS application is contained
in more than 10 four-inch binders and covers the accrediting
agency's 11 core requirements. This application is viewable
at www.stpt.usf.edu/sacs/ .
While USF St. Petersburg has applied for review for separate
accreditation, we are also participating in the preparation
for USF's university-wide reaffirmation scheduled for next
spring. A response from SACS is expected in June.
Steve Micklo, PhD, who chairs the SACS Steering Committe
said, "The collective sigh that you heard Friday afternoon
was the application being picked up by FedEx. Kudos to everyone
who was involved for their diligent work."
I AM USF ST. PETERSBURG: Cynthia Leung
Thanks to Cynthia Leung's enthusiasm
and interest in early childhood literacy and learning,
preschoolers at the YWCA/USF Family Village Child Development
Center were involved in a project to explore how young
children learn scientific vocabulary when their teachers
read aloud children's informational books. This particular
project was partially funded by the Juvenile Welfare Board
of Pinellas County through the USF Collaborative for Children,
Families and communities. Cynthia is an Assistant Professor
in the College of Education and teaches graduate and undergraduate
literacy courses.

Professor Navigates
Road to White House
Since Arts and Sciences professor Judithanne Scourfield
McLauchlan, PhD, returned from the New Hampshire primary,
reporters have begun seeking her analysis of developments
in the Democratic race.
Regional Chancellor Karen A.White said that USF has a
longstanding reputation for political science expertise,
and that she is happy to see our panel of experts expand
once again.
Noting McLauchlan's experience in the White House, White
said,"It shows you that those who can do, teach. And they
teach well."

When the Fountain Inn was closed in late 2003 in preparation
for USF St. Petersburg's acquisition of the property, much
of the Inn 's furniture and accessories were left behind.
Recognizing that some of this material was still useful
and desirable, the USF St. Petersburg staff developed a
pragmatic recycling plan, determining to “waste not.”
