“Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education
in the St. Petersburg Schools”

Nettie Hunt and her daughter Nickie on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1954, after the high court's ruling in the Brown v. Board of Education case that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional."Brown v. Board of Education in the St. Petersburg Schools" is sponsored by the College of Education and Florida Studies, the city of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County Schools and the NAACP. The community is invited to the event on May 4 at the Gibbs High School cafeteria, 6 pm.

The event is part of a series of community conversations examining various aspects of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.

“Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education in the St. Petersburg Schools” will discuss how people felt “locked out” of schools before busing and integration. Panelists will explore the lessons learned from education before and after desegregation to help our community understand what was, what is and what is to be.
