Boxes have moved and new equipment continues
to arrive every day at USF St. Petersburg's first research
laboratories. Eight researchers from the Environmental Science,
Policy and Geography
Program of Distinction have moved in and are getting settled
next door to the Piano Man Building.
Celebrate the official opening with Regional
Chancellor Karen A. White, the members of the Campus Board and
campus researchers at a ribbon cutting Monday, May 24 at
3:30 pm. The ceremony will be held in front of the research
labs, then the campus community can tour and talk to researchers
about their work.
Below are a list of faculty located
in the new laboratories.
Deby Cassill studies
fire ant behavior and uses this research to find insights in
the fields of business and economics.
Kathy Carvalho-Knighton is
an environmental chemist developing methods for the remediation
of environmental contaminants.
Jim Gore, joining the
faculty in Summer 2004, studies the relationships between stream-flow
and stream-ecology.
Jim Krest is a hydrogeologist
and uses natural and injected tracers to study the geochemistry
and hydrology of wetlands and coastal environments.
Melanie Riedinger-Whitmore and Tom
Whitmore study diatoms and algal pigments to gain
insight into paleoenvironmental issues.
Donny Smoak is a geochemist who
uses uranium and thorium isotopes and their decay products to
study environmental processes in lakes, rivers and the ocean.
Bob Wang manages the
laboratory. An established researcher on his own, he oversees
the research labs and provides analytical support for faculty
and students.
