Sets Campaign Record
This year has been a year of firsts
for USF St. Petersburg. New colleges, new faculty and a growing
student headcount. Now, USFSP faculty and staff have set a new
record for contributions to campus programs and scholarships, increasing
130 percent over last year's total. Actual contributions topped
$27,700.

Social Draws Over 80 Alumni
Back to Campus
The
USF Pinellas Alumni Chapter held a summer social in the Williams
courtyard last Thursday which drew more than 80 alumni back to
campus. The social was well attended by campus administration and
college deans as well.
Regional Chancellor Karen A. White
welcomed the alumni back to campus and gave a brief overview of
campus-wide projects and plans. She was joined by Chapter President
Gene Haines ('97) who informed the group of upcoming events.

Campus Loses Longtime Friend

A distinguished and stalwart
advocate of USF St. Petersburg and its community, Edward L. Cole
Jr, MD, passed away Monday, June 21 at his home after a long
illness. He was 84. A respected pediatrician, Cole also served
terms as St. Petersburg’s Mayor and as a member of St.
Petersburg City Council.
Cole was a vital presence at USF St.
Petersburg, offering his time, his talents and his gifts. From
1990-2002, Cole served on the Campus Advisory Board, and was
named a distinguished member. During that time Cole
and his wife Martha co-chaired the first 25th Hour Bayboro Event,
the campus' signature annual fundraiser, along with J.C.
and Carol Russell.

Alumni Hosts Golf Tournament July 10
The Pinellas County Alumni
Chapter will hold a golf tournament Saturday July 10 at
Innisbrook. WTSP Channel 10 Anchor and USF Alumnus Reginald
Roundtree will be Master of Ceremonies.
Open registration for the day of the event begins at 7:30
am with a shotgun start at 8:30 am. The day concludes with
a lunch-buffet, awards and silent auction.

Twain Collection at USFSP
Poynter Library
Visit the Poynter Library at the
University of South Florida St. Petersburg and you’ll find
a collection of Mark Twain’s work valued at more than $80,000.
More than 275 books, pamphlets
and associated papers make up the collection given by David S.
Hubbell, MD, of St. Petersburgin 1998. A significant number
of notable first editions are included, such as “Tom Sawyer,” “Huckleberry
Finn,” and “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras
County,” Twain’s first book to receive critical acclaim.

Fire Spinkler System Testing
Friday
On Friday, June
25, 2004, there will be an inspection and test of automatic fire
sprinkler systems by DaBo Fire Inspection & Service in the
following buildings: CRI, KRC, CAC, Williams House and POY Library.
The inspection includes walk through and testing
of alarms. This is a requirement enforced by the State Fire Marshall.

FEMA Project Underway
Over the course of the past 50 years, there has been
considerable damage to the existing seawall and dolphins at USF
St. Petersburg. Currently there is subsidence behind the seawall
indicating wash out from joints or breaches in the seawall structure.
There are wood pilings, both part of dock infrastructure and dolphins,
which exhibit damage from shipworms and from boat impacts during
storms.
FEMA grant funding
has been secured for mitigation and prevention of further damage
due to storm events.

June Blood Drive
The June Blood Drive will be held June
30 from 9:30 - 5 pm in front of Davis Hall.
Coupons for Lowry Park Zoo, a picnic jug and Chick-fil-A
coupons for all donors.

- Close to 700 pints of blood are needed every
day in this area.
