Report from the Regional Chancellor

Photo of Dr. Karen WhiteAs we come to the end of the first year of a new campus structure at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, it is appropriate to commend the extraordinary work of the students, faculty, staff, and administrators who created a success model for this institution. The work that occurred last year built on a long-standing tradition of academic excellence and a caring campus climate.

Among the many achievements of the year were the creation of colleges and the establishment of college governance procedures, implementation of institutional promotion and tenure guidelines, completion of phase two of the USFSP Strategic Plan, separate accreditation of the journalism program, agreements on the process and a timeline for separate accreditation of the colleges of business and e ducation, and the introduction of fifty-one new faculty and a new administrative group.

USF and Dali Museum Offer Avant-Garde Lecture Series

This fall, USF St. Petersburg and the Dalí Museum will bring leading experts from the avant-garde cultural movements of the 20th century to the area and give community members the unique opportunity to study with honors students.

The introductory lecture series, “Avant-Garde,” begins Sept. 13 will be held twice a month and is free and open to the public. Each lecture will help place the work of Salvador Dalí in a broader cultural context and discuss and compare the different avant-garde movements in Europe. The series will also look at the range of media avant-gardists used, including literature, painting, sculpture, film and music.

Assistant professor of English, Peter Kalliney, PhD, said that he is excited about this collaborative effort with the Dalí because this will be a unique experience for everyone involved. “Community members will have the rare opportunity to delve into the foundation of the avant-garde movement alongside USF honors students,” said Kalliney, lecture series co-planner.

Prepare for the Professional in HR Exam

USF's Professional and Workforce Development Division, in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management, will present a comprehensive 12-week program to help Human Resource professionals prepare for SHRM's national certification examination. The Professional and Senior Professional in Human Resources designations reflect broad-based competency, professional status, experience and professional achievement.

USF's program will meet at USF St. Petersburg on Thursday evenings from August 26 to November 11, 2004. The fee is $900 for SHRM members and $950 for non-members; it includes the latest edition of the SHRM Learning System and a CD Rom study disk, a $600 value.

Linda Bailey, SPHR, will lead participants in an intensive review of management practices, selection and placement, training and development, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations and health, safety and security. Practice tests help overcome exam anxiety, develop test-taking skills, and identify areas of strength and weakness.
