Freshman
Convocation this Sunday
USF St. Petersburg will kick off a new system-wide tradition at Freshman
Convocation this Sunday, August 22 at 3 pm at the CAC. Incoming freshmen
and parents are invited to learn about campus traditions and meet
deans and faculty.
The convocation, which will formally welcome
our freshman class to the university, has been dubbed the “seal
ceremony” because it will share core campus values including the
globalization of education, that are illustrated in the university
seal.
Regional Vice Chancellor
Charles Brown said that Sunday's event begins a much anticipated
new tradition on campus. ”Convocation is a time for students and
parents to meet faculty, staff and administrators before their classes
begin. It serves as an introduction to the commitment that USF St.
Petersburg faculty and staff have for freshmen as important members
of our USF family.”
Students will have the
opportunity to meet campus notables including Tom Piccolo, student
government president, Karen A. White, PhD, regional chancellor and
Thomas Smith, winner of the 2003 Excellence in Teaching Award. Additionally,
President Judy Genshaft and other administrators will greet the
new class as well.
A reception will follow
the ceremony. To RSVP, please contact Nancy Coscia by August 19
at 3-4180 or ncoscia@stpt.usf.edu

Disaster
Relief Plan a Success
In preparation for Hurricane
Charley, USF St. Petersburg tested the Campus Disaster Plan. While
St. Petersburg avoided the hurricane, but thanks to the plan, preparation
was carried out successfully and minor adjustments were made to
further improve it.
“We planned well for the
hurricane and fortunately everything turned out alright. Our public
safety officers were already deployed to help with the impending
crisis,” said Abdul Nasser, regional vice chancellor of administration
and finance and emergency operations director.
Although USF closed system-wide
last Friday, all campuses returned to their regular schedule on
Monday. A reception was held, Wednesday, August 18 to thank those
at USF St. Petersburg who went “above the call of duty” during preparation
for the hurricane.

dollar-for-dollar to provide food, shelter, clothing and medicine
to those in need.

“We're taking care of
rebuilding the electric system, but it will take all of us to come
together to rebuild the community,” said H. William (Bill) Habermeyer
Jr., president and CEO of Progress Energy Florida and USF St. Petersburg
Campus Board member.
