Library Exhibit Displays Antarctica Artifacts
Head over to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library to view "A Voyage South to a Cool Climate for Hot Research," an exhibit of materials gathered during scientific expeditions to Antarctica during the 20th century.
Joseph Torres, PhD, professor of biological oceanography in the College of Marine Science, donated the exhibit materials, along with correspondence, clippings, and other memorabilia, to the Special Collections and Archives department at the Poynter Library.
Many of the items were gathered by a lieutenant in the United States Navy during Operation Deep Freeze III, an expedition from 1957-1958.
One interesting item is a half-full container of powdered cocoa found at the site of a hut built by Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) during his 1908-1909 expedition.
The collection also includes materials found at base camps from the early 1900s. One item, a 1901 newspaper from Dunedin, New Zealand, may have been brought to Antarctica by Sir Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912), one of the first British explorers who tried to reach the South Pole. A copy of the front page of the paper is in the exhibit case.
The exhibit, which is available for viewing through early September, is located in the first-floor display cases near the elevator.
Hurricane Related Information
As Florida experiences another active hurricane season, University Relations will include frequent articles in eNews to keep you prepared for emergency situations. Your safety is the campus' number one priority.
Leave of Absence in Emergency Situations
In the case of an emergency – such as a hurricane – only the USF President has the authority to close each campus. When this happens, all USF personnel, with the exception of specific staff in Physical Plant and the Police Department, are required to leave campus immediately.
If the campus is officially closed, faculty and staff will still receive their regular pay in the form of Administrative Leave and no annual leave will be deducted.
However, if there is a disruption such as a temporary power outage, but the campus has not been officially closed, faculty and staff will not be granted Administrative Leave. Individuals can choose to continue to work, find a more suitable work area, use annual leave or, if possible, adjust their work week. Even if your direct supervisor gives you permission to leave, no administrative leave will be issued.
For more information about leave, visit the Human Resources Web site at www.stpt.usf.edu/adminservices/hr. To learn more about the campus’ Emergency Operations Plans, visit www.stpt.usf.edu/police/eop_archive.htm or contact the chair of the Emergency Operations Committee, Abdul Nasser, at 553-4466.
New Advancement Web Site Offers Inside Look
Although you may not realize it yet, the historic Williams House is home to an important USF St. Petersburg department that serves both the campus and community.
Advancement, which serves as an umbrella for University Relations and Development, has a new Web site to give you an inside look at this department’s functions and services.
University Relations houses six staff members that coordinate everything from campus marketing and publicity needs to special events, media relations, alumni affairs, campus Web site and campus communications.
The department also serves as a hub for publicity materials, such as fliers, brochures, posters, and folders for Enrollment Services, Student Affairs and each college. Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact University Relations if they would like new or existing publicity materials to distribute at upcoming campus events or major conferences.
The other Advancement department is Development, which is the central fundraising office for USF St. Petersburg and coordinates scholarships, major gifts, professorships and more.
To learn more about Advancement and how the department can help you, visit the new department Web site at www.stpt.usf.edu/advancement or call 553-4256.
Preview Potential Residence Hall Furniture
Although students are not moving into Residence Hall One until August 2006, now is the time to decide what their accommodations will look like... and Facilities Planning and Construction wants your input.
The campus community is encouraged to attend a housing furniture display Monday July 25 through Friday July 29 in the CAC. The display will include furniture samples from five vendors for a typical bedroom, living area and lounge, as well as public spaces.
After reviewing each display, visitors can make comments on a form provided to give feedback. Responses will be taken into large consideration when the committee makes the decision to select a furniture vendor.
For more information, please contact Facilities Planning and Construction at 553-4822.
Parking Lot Upgrades Won't Disrupt Campus
To limit any inconvenience to the campus community, upcoming work on a number of parking lots has been scheduled on weekends.
During the weekends of July 23 and 24 and Aug. 6 and 7, campus lots — Lot 1 in front of the library, Lot 17 across from USGS, and Lots 6, 7, 8 on the peninsula — will be resealed and re-striped.
"The weekend closures will have the least amount of impact on our students, staff and faculty for their parking needs," Robert Lugo said.
To remind people of the upcoming projects, Parking Services will be placing fliers on vehicles throughout campus.

Automated Leave Tracking Training
If you coordinate attendance and leave, register to attend an automated leave tracking training session. Human Resources will hold two sessions on Monday, July 25 from 9:30 - 10:30 am and 10:30 - 11:30 am in the Library's Computer Training Room, POY218.
The automated leave tracking system will handle leave requests, leave approval, accrual of leave earned, and will record leave to maintain accurate leave balances.
All Attendance and Leave Coordinators are responsible for training each employee in his or her college or department prior to the implementation date. The campus is scheduled to go live with the new system October 1.
Space is limited to 20 participants per session. If you would like to attend one of the sessions, contact Barbara Fleischer at 553-4115 or fleische@stpt.usf.edu.
HR Workshop Meeting Updates

A&P, USPS Staff: Position Description Questionnaires
This is your last chance to submit your Position Description Questionnaires (PDQ) for USF's Reclassification Project. Human Resources needs all campus PDQ's returned to their office, TER402 by Friday, July 22. Each USPS and A&P position, filled and vacant, must have a PDQ completed.
Forms are also located on the Human Resources Web site on the left side of the page under the Classification heading. For more information, please call Barbara Fleischer, Human Resources coordinator, at 553-4115.

USF Educator Gets $405,000 Research Grant
St. Petersburg Times
July 17, 2005
The National Institute of Child Health and Development recently awarded a $405,000 research grant to Dr. James P. McHale, associate professor of psychology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg.
McHale was presented with the Independent Scientist Award, a grant supporting intensive research effort by newly independent scientists for work pursuing major new concepts, paradigms, theories, techniques or research programs that promise to have an important impact on their field of health science.
The grant, $81,000 a year for five years, was awarded to advance McHale's ongoing investigation of "Prebirth Predictors of Early Coparenting." McHale has been studying factors that shape early patterns of co-parenting within families just months after a baby's birth.

USF Professor Receives Rare Grant
Tampa Bay Business Journal
July 14, 2005
James P. McHale, a USF St. Petersburg psychology professor, is the latest recipient of a type of research grant handed out only five other times in three decades.
McHale received a grant for $405,000 from the National Institute of Child Health and Development. Called the Independent Scientist Award, the grant is designed to support the work of newer researchers whose investigations already have made a mark in their field.
McHale's research introduced the concept of "co-parenting" in the child development field. His work determined that even young toddlers benefit from parents who support each other's parenting efforts.
