Campus Welcomes New Director of Development

The campus welcomes Tom Piazze, who has been named the new Executive Director of Development for USF St. Petersburg.  He will officially begin Aug. 8.

Piazze

Piazze will join Jon Kile, associate director of Development in the campus Advancement office, coordinating fundraising efforts at USF St. Petersburg.

“The campus is fortunate to hire Thomas Piazze,” said Gary Mormino, PhD, chair of the hiring committee and professor of Florida Studies. "Mr. Piazze brings an irresistible combination of experience and enthusiasm to our campus and community. I am looking forward to seeing his lasting imprint. Successful development can help us realize our collective dreams for USF St. Petersburg."

Piazze previously served as vice president for Institutional Advancement at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., where he led the school’s first comprehensive capital campaign.

Prior to that, Piazze gained 11 years of fund-raising experience at the United States Military Academy at West Point, the University of Pennsylvania, and James Madison University.

Piazze earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from West Point, and a Master of Arts in International Relations-Western European Studies from Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Ca.

Both Piazze and Kile will have offices on the second floor of Bayboro Hall.

Prestigious Festival of Reading Comes to Campus

For the first time, USF St. Petersburg will host the St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading on Saturday, Oct. 29, 10 am – 5 pm. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend this free celebraton of literacy, which will feature internationally recognized authors, book signings and a variety of other scheduled entertainment along Bayboro Harbor.

Reading Festival

Though the final roster isn’t complete, this year’s festival already includes a who’s who of popular authors showcasing their latest releases.

Those scheduled to appear include Candace Bushnell, author of “Sex and the City," who will promote her new book, "Lipstick Jungle;" R.L. Stine, author of the “Goosebumps” series for children, who will talk about his "Mostly Ghostly" series; PBS news anchor Jim Lehrer, “The Franklin Affair;" Doris Kearns Goodwin, whose latest novel “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln," is slated to be made into a motion picture; and Sue Ellen Cooper, "Red Hat Society: Fun and Friendship after Fifty."

Also on hand will be our very own Ray Arsenault, PhD, “Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice;" Gary Mormino, PhD, “Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams;" and Lee Irby, “7,000 Clams."

Guests can also enjoy music, poetry, and open air theater presentations and stroll through a marketplace featuring booksellers, exhibitors and fabulous food vendors. One of the major highlights is a Children’s StoryLand, featuring story telling, arts and crafts, as well as interactive games. The College of Education is helping to coordinate a literary character and Halloween costume parade for the event.

For more information, including the latest list of authors, please visit the Festival of Reading Web site at www.festivalofreading.com.

Final Friday Hosts Needed

Openings are still available for departments that would like to sponsor a Final Friday. These events are great social occasions that bring together faculty and staff so they can get to know one another and share what they do at USF St. Petersburg.

Final Friday receptions are held on the last Friday of each month and are sponsored by different departments on campus.

The Nelson Poynter Memorial Library is already lined up to host the Sept. 30 event, and University Relations will host Oct. 21.

The remaining available dates include Nov. 18, Jan. 27, Feb. 24, March 31, and April 28. For more information, contact Myrna Adams at 553-4890, or adamsm@stpt.usf.edu.

Campus Mourns Passing of Carol Cargill

Dr. Carol J. Cargill of Largo, FL and Narragansett, RI, passed away Monday, July 25, from complications of breast cancer.

Cargill was the founder and long-time director of the International Language Institute (now English Language Institute) at the University of South Florida. For the last 28 years, she was a professor of applied linguistics and foreign languages at the university, first in Tampa, then in St. Petersburg.

Cargill

Cargill was also the president of the Pan American University Foundation, serving as a consultant and coordinating an ESL program for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ non-English-speaking players.

Cargill was born in Providence, RI. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Russian from Brown University, she worked for the U.S. government as a translator and researcher. She went on to obtain a Master of Arts in Slavic Languages from New York University and a doctorate in applied linguistics from Georgetown University. She was first and foremost an educator, devoting her life to teaching and directing several university-based ESL programs and ESL teacher-training programs.

Over the years, Cargill researched second-language acquisition, cultural bias in standardized testing, listening comprehension and cross-cultural communication, presenting papers and workshops all over the world. She published five books and numerous articles in international journals; her last book will be published posthumously.

Cargill was involved with the Tampa chapter of Sister Cities International and served as the Rhode Island State Coordinator for Sister Cities. She was also involved with Women in International Trade (WIT) and the Tampa Bay International Business Council. She was the founder and former president of Sunshine State TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Bay Area TESOL, and a past president of the Florida Foreign Language Association, national TESOL and numerous other organizations. Committed to increasing cross-cultural understanding, she was truly a global citizen.

The funeral will take place at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home. A memorial will also be held on Friday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 pm in the Marshall Center ballroom on the Tampa campus. In lieu of flowers, Cargill’s family strongly urges all who remember her to have annual mammograms or prostate exams.

Commemorative 40th Anniversary Logos Available

The upcoming 40th Anniversary of our campus is an exciting time for our community, and to help commemorate the occasion and our many years of accomplishments, the campus has developed two pieceHorizontalLogos of memorable artwork that will serve as our official celebration logos.

While the round and horizontal designs have distinct advantages depending on the items they are applied to, University Relations recommends using the horizontal version whenever possible, particularly because it allows the campus name to be easily seen, even at reduced sizes.

Both marks can be used on a variety of materials throughout the year-long celebration, including event programs, invitations, letterhead, and promotional items.

RoundLogo

Keep in mind that use of the logos must be approved by University Relations prior to printing or other production. To obtain the logos for production pieces, please contact University Relations at 553-4256.

>> Read: USF 40-Year Mark Standards (.pdf) - Provides detailed information about the logos, as well as guidelines for proper usage of 40th Anniversary artwork.

USF Implements New Student ID Numbers

Faculty and staff take note: USF is currently implementing a new student identifier to reduce the risk of identity theft for students. This unique number will replace student Social Security Numbers (SSN) as their primary identifier at USF. This "USF-ID" begins with a "U" and is followed by eight numeric characters (for example: U1234-5678).

For faculty, this means your class rosters will now include the USF-ID identifer instead of Social Security Numbers.

The following are some important points the campus community should be aware of:

- The USF-ID will become the new primary identifier for students only.  Employees will continue to access the GEMS self service application with their employee ID.

- Students can now look up their new USF-ID by logging onto the OASIS Web Site. Their USF-ID number is displayed on the main OASIS page, as well as several other places within the system. After acquiring their new ID, students are encouraged to use it to log-in to OASIS and present it as identification for other USF processes.

- All newly-issued student USF ID cards will have the USF-ID printed on the card, under their picture.

Florida's Explosion, Farming to Boom Town

Sun-Sentinel

July 24, 2005

Stuck in a traffic jam on I-95, today's Floridians would find it hard to believe that on the eve of Pearl Harbor the population of the good old Sunshine State was the smallest of any state in the South. Since then Florida has become the largest of all Southern states and is in fact the fourth largest in the country and well on its way to claiming third place.
