Students Spend Day at the Capitol

Last week, 25 USF St. Petersburg students traveled to Tallahassee for a first-hand glimpse at the state’s political arena during the annual USF Day at the Capitol.

Students on the Bench

Prior to attending USF festivities, students toured the Florida Supreme Court, complete with the opportunity to sit in the Justice chairs and listen to an oral argument from a search and seizure case, a moment many students enjoyed. Half of the participants are currently enrolled in trip coordinator Judithanne Scourfield McLauchlan’s Constitutional Law II course, so she said they were versed in Fourth Amendment search and seizure case law.

During their politically-packed day, students met with Regional Chancellor Karen A. White at the capitol for a briefing on the campus’ legislative priorities. Students also met with Rep. Leslie Waters, Rep. Charlie Justice and other Pinellas legislators and had their first lobbying experience by supporting appropriations for the new Science and Technology Building and Student Center.

USF Day at the Capitol
In the afternoon, the group joined the USF system-wide contingent for lunch and festivities on the capitol courtyard with entertainment by the USF band and cheerleaders.

Before heading back to St. Petersburg, students watched proceedings on the floor in the House and Senate and toured Florida State University law school.

USF St. Petersburg has already raised more than $12,000 toward the goal of $20,000, but more participation is needed. Every gift, small or large, is important so we hope each member of our campus community can contribute.

At the reception, Regional Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs James Malek, PhD, Campus Board Member Bill Habermeyer, Jr., and representatives from the three colleges joined White to praise the students' commitment to academic excellence and their pursuit to be the best.

The reception, which was the first of its kind at USF St. Petersburg, was extremely well received by the students. White said she plans to continue this next Fall as another important campus tradition.
