Tallahassee Trip a Success

USF St. Petersburg students visited Tallahassee this past Monday and Tuesday for “USF Day 2006."  The highlights: lobbying legislators, visiting the FSU Law School and meeting a Florida Supreme Court Justice.

Exchange Agreement Signed
The president of CETYS University, Enrique Blancas, Ph.D., met with Regional Chancellor Karen A. White and other campus administrators at a recent lunch at the Williams House.

The purpose of Blanca’s visit was to teach him about the USF system, the St. Petersburg area and to discuss the various educational opportunities and international exchange programs available between the two systems.

You may have noticed snipe signs, ads, banners, posters and flyers all over campus telling readers to “Study in the Sun.” April 17 marked the beginning of summer and fall registration, and this year Academic Affairs is ensuring students are registered for the upcoming semesters.

Media Law Professor Retires
G. Michael Killenberg, Ph.D., media law professor and former director is retiring this semester as a full-time tenured professor and faculty member. He stepped down as head of the journalism department last spring after a year-long sabbatical.

Killenberg created a top notch program in 1992 producing journalists in all fields with the help of colleague and friend Robert Dardenne, Ph.D., associate professor.

After Decade of Service, Librarian Retires
Karilyn Jaap is retiring at the end of the spring semester.  She has worked as a reference librarian at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library for the past 10 years.

The Human Resources department and Purchasing department have moved to a new location. The new offices are in Bayboro 206. Both departments phone numbers remain the same.

USFSP's commencement ceremony is Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m. in the Mahaffey Theater.

Student planners for the 2006-07 academic year are underway. If you have any events or dates to include please e-mail submissions to Jennifer Quinn-Taylor at jqtaylor@spadmin.usf.edu no later than May 5. Student planners will be given to all new students and will be available to returning students, faculty and staff for $5.

Learn to Swim

If you have children  between the ages of 7 and 14, USF St. Petersburg can teach them to swim. The Aquatics Center is hosting a learn to swim clinic May 17, 18 and 19. The cost is $48. Other water related activities will be taught including: kayaking, snorkeling and beach safety. For more information contact Teresa Przetocki, aquatic programs coordinator, at 3-4421.
