USFSP Achieves Separate Accreditation
The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools recommended separate accreditation to USF St. Petersburg on June 23. This accreditation of USF St. Petersburg is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2006.

The date of the decision was exactly one year after SACS recommended the campus fast track its site visit from spring 2007 to 2006.

Tradition of Giving Breaks Record
Faculty and staff contributed a record amount in the annual Faculty and Staff Campaign at USF St. Petersburg. The drive wrapped up June 30 with more than $43,000 raised, 65 percent higher than the goal of $26,000.

Renovation at the CAC
The kitchen in the Campus Activities Center is undergoing renovations to provide room for the campus’ growing student organizations. Construction should be completed by mid-August.

Recent Graduate Publishes Book
A 2005 graduate of USFSP, La Toia C. Rushing published her debut book of poetry, It Just Doesn't Get Any Better, in June.

She said writing has been a good outlet for her thoughts.

New USF Alumni Chairman
Charley Harris of St. Petersburg was elected chairman of the board of directors of the University of South Florida Alumni Association at the organization's annual meeting in June.

He replaces John Thomas, who will remain active as immediate past chairman and member of the board of directors.

Hall Makes its Debut
The dedication for Residence Hall One will take place Tuesday, August 22 at 11 a.m. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the event at the hall.

Taking Over the Wheel
Imagine parking in the shade, keeping your vehicle out of the baking sun and torrential downpours.

That dream is now a reality. All faculty and staff are invited to an open house for the Fifth Avenue South parking facility on Tuesday, August 15 at 2 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served in Police Services.

Max Kerlin, Director of Budget Services, announced he's retiring. His last day will be Friday, Sept. 29.

His next stop? Taking the time to do things he always wanted.

New Coordinator for Multicultural Affairs
La-Tarri Canty comes to USF St. Petersburg from the State University of New York, College at Oneonta. The New York native is looking forward to implementing social change for students of underrepresented populations through leadership, advocacy and mentoring.

She begins work Friday, Aug. 11.

Congratulations Dr. Heller! Governor Jeb Bush signed the bill into law that changes the name of Coquina Hall to H. William Heller Hall when the professor of Special Education retires.

USFSP Outstanding Graduate Applications

The USF Alumni Association and Pinellas County Alumni Chapter are accepting nominations for the Summer 2006 Outstanding Graduate. The due date is Monday, July 18.  Seniors completing course work this summer may nominate themselves or be nominated by a member of the University community. Candidates must have at least a 3.5 GPA to be considered for this award. An application and two letters of recommendation are required by the deadline.

Please assist the Alumni Association by forwarding this information and the application to qualified students.
