ID Card and Registration a Must to Work Out
The Fitness Center and the Waterfront Office begin a new check-in procedure starting Friday, Sept. 1.

It will require all users of the two facilities, including faculty, staff and students, to register and possess a USF ID Card.

553 Prefix Terminates Soon
The three-digit prefix for the St. Petersburg campus changed from 553 to 873 last November. The 553 prefix will expire Dec. 31.

Emergency Call Plan Wins Grant
USF St. Petersburg plans to install an emergency notification system that can call faculty, staff and students on their cell phones, home phones and office numbers, depending on the type of emergency.

USFSP Hobsons Team named Rookie of the Year
The USF St. Petersburg Hobsons team, which includes Frank Hohengarten, Ed.D., dean of Enrollment Services; Kevin Coughlin, director of Admissions and Records; John Husfield and Erika Llenza, of University Relations, was recognized as Rookie of the Year at the first U.S. Enrollment Management Technology Connect users’ conference in Las Vegas in July.

Senior Strives to Make a Difference
Britni Tokotch was born and raised in St. Petersburg. Her mother is an at-home daycare provider and her father a firefighter.

After graduation from St. Pete High School’s IB program, she decided she wanted to stay close to home and major in education, so she enrolled at USF St. Petersburg.

Love of Florida History Sparks Book
USF St. Petersburg Florida Studies student Michelle Hoffman says a paper she wrote for a graduate seminar, War and Society, blossomed into her new book.

St. Petersburg’s Maritime Service Training Station was published this spring by Arcadia Publishing. The book tells the story of St. Petersburg’s history as a training site for the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II.

Watefront Closed for Meeting
The Waterfront will be closed, Tuesday, Aug. 15, for an annual safety and administrative procedures meeting for all Waterfront staff.  The swimming pool, boat, kayak, canoe and dock will be closed for the day. Great Explorations, the Children’s Museum, is celebrating 20 years in St. Pete. In honor of this milestone, and to thank the community for their support, it will host 20 Open Houses over 20 weeks for 20 organizations in the community.

Faculty, staff, students and their families will be admitted to the museum FREE all day on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Brown Recruited to FAU Post
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Charles Brown, Ph.D., has accepted the position of Vice President for Student Affairs at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. FAU serves 26,000 students on six campuses; Brown will be located on its main campus in Boca Raton.

Brownell Fills Need on Campus
A new role begins for Blaine Brownell who was the interim College of Business dean for eight months while the campus conducted a national search.

His new position as Senior University Advisor for Strategic Planning and International Programs begins Sept. 1.

China Conference Discusses Future of Journalism  
Bob Dardenne, associate professor in Journalism and Media Studies, spent 10 days in Shanghai, China this summer participating in a mass media dean's conference on journalism education.

He lectured on the challenges of international journalism education, China's image in the U.S. press and the future of journalism.

A&P Election Results
Congratulations to Cedric Howard, Director of Student Services, and Jim Stull, Waterfront Coordinator. They were chosen to represent USF St. Petersburg in recent A&P Council elections.  The new council members will take their position in September. In addition, Howard will serve as president of the board for the upcoming year.

Bulls football fans, save the date!

Friday, Sept. 29 is USF St. Petersburg Football Night. Free football tickets will be distributed from the CAC Activities Desk starting Monday, Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. Faculty or Staff only, with a USF ID card, may claim up to six tickets. First come, first serve. It's the Bulls vs. Rutgers.

Fire Alarm Inspection

 Operations and Maintenance Services is planning to have the fire alarms tested and inspected the week of August. 14.  Inspectors will visit every building on campus and it should take at least a week, Ron Quincel, maintenance supervisor, said.

The Poynter Library will be closed the weekends of Aug. 12-13; Aug. 19-20; and Aug. 26-27.  It will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. only on Monday, Aug. 14, through Thursday, Aug. 17.
