Faculty Awards Handed out at
Academic Convocation
Academic Convocation was held Tuesday,
Sept. 12. This year, instead of a speaker from
outside of the university, Karen A. White selected
last year's winner to address the crowd.
Mark J. Walters, associate professor in
Journalism and Media Studies, spoke to the
faculty about the relationship between scholarship
and teaching.

SUCCEED Tampa Bay Tackles
Teacher Shortage The Colleges of Education at USF
St. Petersburg and USF Tampa joined forces and
created an action plan to build on their
collaboration and expand programs at each school.
The two colleges will share a “SUCCEED, Florida!”
grant of $300,000, entitled SUCCEED, Tampa Bay.

The Counseling and Career Center held
a part-time job fair “Work, Earn and Learn”
Thursday, Sept. 7 in the Breezeway of Davis and
Coquina Halls.

A "live test" of the new USFSP

Relations, the Executive Team and 352 Media
collaborated on a new design for the homepage.

Directory Coming To better serve our faculty,

located on the website will be retired October 15.

Board visited Washington D.C. for the annual
American Student Government Association
Conference. They met other student leaders,
networked, shared strategies and found ideas
to bring back to campus.

Bureau Gives Students Journalism
Experience
“Learn journalism where you can
practice journalism." That slogan is becoming a
reality for journalism students at USF St.
Petersburg. Journalism students now work out of a
newsroom, writing stories about the Midtown
community of St. Petersburg for local media
outlets.
The office, in the James B. Sanderlin Center,
gives students real-world experience as they write
features, personality profiles, business stories
and neighborhood announcements.

Teach Like a Pro Delaney J. Kirk, Visiting
Professor of Management, will teach a three-day
workshop on classroom management Jan. 4-6,
2007. The course is part of the National
Science Foundation’s Chautauqua program which
offers a number of faculty development courses for
professors of all disciplines.

New Book Helps Parents with

Positive Family Intervention project, has written
a new book to help parents support and respond to
their children’s behavior.
Parenting with Positive Behavior
Support is a user-friendly handbook that
offers parents easy-to-follow guidelines for
identifying the reasons for their children’s
behavior and effectively intervening.

Interim Student Affair Leader
Arrives
Regional Chancellor Karen A. White
announced that Steve Neilson will serve as the
Interim Regional Vice Chancellor of Student
Affairs.
He comes from Rollins College in Winter Park
where he spent more than 30 years. He began work

Librarian Retires After More
Than 20 Years on Campus
Barbara
Reynolds is retiring Sept. 29 after 22 years of
service to USF St. Petersburg in the
administrative offices of the Nelson Poynter
Memorial Library.

fans, save the date!
Friday, Sept. 29 is USF St. Petersburg
Football Night. Free football tickets will be
distributed from the CAC Activities Desk starting
Monday, Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. Faculty or Staff
only, with a USF ID card, may claim up to six
tickets. First come, first serve. It's
the Bulls vs. Rutgers.
