Research Awards & Recognition

Fellows named Bank of America Endowed Professor

College of Business Accounting Professor, James Fellows, Ph.D, has been named Endowed Professor in Business for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Bank of America Endowed Professorship in Business was created in 1990 to recognize USF St. Petersburg faculty doing outstanding work in the community.

Carr consults on PBS Documentary

Dr. David Carr, professor of history, consulted on a documentary premiering March 23 on PBS at 10 p.m. The documentary, The Power and the Glory, details the story of Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein, two pioneering , visionary entrepreneurs who, starting with next to nothing, created what is today the $150 billion international health and beauty industry.

Carvalho-Knighton Honored for Mentorship and Leadership

Dr. Kathy Carvalho-Knoghton, assistant professor of chemistry, has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2009 Women's Leadership Awards, an annual awards program sponsored by the system-wide Women's Status Committee.

Family Process Selects McHale's Study as Featured Article

Dr. James McHale, chair of the Department of Psychology and director of the USF Family Study Center, striking new findings appearing in the latest edition of the journal Family Process revealed that 3-month-old infants can engage in coordinated interactions with two adults simultaneously - significantly earlier than previously thought. And, that their capacity to do so is linked to the patterns of early coparenting shown by their parents.

Named to the Editorial Board

Dr. Narciso J. Hidalgo, assistant professor in Spanish in the Division of World Languages Education, presented a paper at the 1st Annual Conference of Afro-Latin American Studies, March 12 - 14, 2009, at Clark Atlanta University and was asked to serve on the editorial board of the Negritud:Journal of Afro-Latin American Studies

Freedom riders documentary Receives $1 Million Grant

Dr. Raymond Arsenault, the John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History and author of the award-winning book, Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Justice. The national Endowment for the Human ties awarded $1 million to WGBH Boston for the production of an American Experience documentary based on Dr. Arsenault's book.

Durand Selected to Edit Psychology Journal

Dr. V. Mark Durand, professor of Psychology, has been named co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions where he has been a consulting editor since 1999.

Brice REceives Honor for Multicultural contributions

Dr. Alejandro Brice, associate professor of secondary education and English for speakers of other languages, received the Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The Association has more than 130,000 members.

Schmidt Earns Hall of Fame Status at Alma Mater

Dr. Martina Schmidt, instructor of finance, was inducted into the Florida Atlantic University Athletic Hall of Fame and honored at the university's football game on Saturday, November 8, 2008.

College of Education Announces New Professor Emeritus

Professor Stephen John Micklo was announced as professor emeritus of the college of Education at the campus board meeting on May 2, 2008.

John Arthur Received National Science Foundation Award

Dr. John Arthur, Assistant Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences  has received a second award from the National Science Foundation for $59,600 for his research project: An Ethnoarchaeological Study of the Gamo Caste System in Southwestern Ethiopia. The award is effective February 1, 2006 and expires January 31, 2008.

 

Mormino Wins Tebeau Book Award

The Tebeau Book Award Committee of the Florida Historical Society has decided that Gary R. Mormino's Book, Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams, is the winner of this year's Charlton Tebeau Book Award.  The award will be presented at the Society's Annual Meeting Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Registry Resort in Naples.

 

Congressman Announces EPA Grant

Congressman C. W. "Bill" Young  joined by USF St. Petersburg leaders and researchers announced a $727,000 grant from the National Center for Environmental Research of the U.S. Environmental  Protection Agency.  This funding establishes the Center for Science and Policy Applications for the Coastal Environment ("C-SPACE").  The program, led by professors Christopher D'Elia and James Gore, will enable increased interaction for USF St. Petersburg researchers in Environmental Science, Policy and Geography with collaborators at the USF College of Marine Science, the Center for Coastal & Watershed Studies of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Southeast Fisheries  Science and the Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service/NOAA at the State's Florida Wildlife Research Institute, all of which are located at USF St. Petersburg.

Professors John W. Arthur and Kathryn J. Weedman

received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for $95,100. The title of the research grant: Acquisition of a Toyota Land Cruiser for the Ethnoarchaeological Caste Project in Southwestern Ethiopia.  The project is effective September 15, 2006 to August 31, 2009.

SWFWMD Funds Grant for Environmental Science Program

Dr. James A. Gore was awarded a $40,000 grant by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD).  The project title:

Rainbow River Macroinvertebrate & Fish Assessments.

Gore Receives Grant From Columbus State University

Dr. James A. Gore is awarded a $20,000 grant by Columbus State University for the Weracoba Creek Macroinvertebrate Responses to BMP's for Stormwater Treatment.

US Department of Education Funds Special Education

Dr. Bill Heller has been awarded $65,000 by the US Department of Education for his research project on Special Projects and Demonstrations for Providing Vocational Rehabilitation Services to Individuals with Severe Disabilities.

Marine Science and Education Collaboration Nets Research Grant

Dr. Ashanti J. Pyrtle, USF College of Marine Science and Dr. Vivian Fueyo, USF St. Petersburg College of Education have received $17,212  for a recent award for the MS PHD'S Evaluation , Education, and Professional Development Activities.

 

Professor James McHale Receives Prestigious Grant

USF St. Petersburg Professor, James McHale, a USF St. Petersburg psychology professor, is the latest recipient of a type of research grant awarded only five other times in three decades.  McHale received the Independent Scientist Award, a grant for $405,000 from the National Institute of Child Health and Development.

Office Promotes Statewide Education Initiative

The Florida Inclusion Network regional office, located on at USF St. Petersburg is one of 20 statewide locations that are part of this network, which uses the latest research to help teachers, administrators, and families to work together toward classroom inclusion - the process of including students with disabilities with students who do not have disabilities.  The office is charged with serving 165 schools in DeSoto, Hardey, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties.  The Florida Department of Education funds the local project with a $260,000 federal grant that is renewable on a yearly basis.  Education Professor H. USF St. Petersburg Showcases Undergraduate Research at Honors Week

The best and the brightest students showcased their scholarly research  projects at a research symposium  and were recognized for their achievements during USF St. Petersburg's annual Student Honors Week, April 18 - 22.  The highlight of the week-long academic celebration was the Tomorrow's Leaders Symposium, an exhibition of undergraduate student research.  The event was held  Tuesday, April 19 ,2005 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Davis Hall Lobby.  The event was free and open to the public.  More than 50 students and faculty prepared displays and research presentations  that were also presented at conferences nationwide.

Journalism Professor Gets Writing Honor

Mark J.
